There are currently types of internet plans provided by internet service providers:broadband and dial up service. Dial up service is an older technology from the earliest days of the internet when computer users would connect via a telephone cable to a central server. These connections had a few advantages, the foremost of which being that they were available nearly anywhere as almost anyone has access to a phone. Unfortunately however the existing telephone services were and are not designed for high speed data transmission, so the speeds of these connections tended to be very slow.
As the internet as evolved, more and more websites are serving up rich content in the form of video, flash animations, and interactive pages. On a dial up connection these pages take quite a while to load and in some cases never actually finish loading or do not work properly. These websites are designed for users with internet plans and as the numbers of dial up users continue to dwindle this trend will only continue.
Broadband internet access is a term that refers to any high speed internet access. High speed generally being defined as "faster than dial up". An average broadband connection is anywhere from 50 to several hundred times faster than a dial up connection, and more and more companies are releasing broadband service as technology advances.
Internet plans are now offered by phone companies, cable companies, mobile companies, and even satellite and wireless versions of broadband are available. Each of these technologies has their own limitations and advantages and there can be a lot of different factors to consider when choosing one. The first thing to know however is the general terms used to refer to each type of service.
Higher speed plans are now provided by a telephone companies in Australia, usually referred to as "nbn network plans", whereas broadband provided by a cable company is simply referred to as "ADSL" or "DSL". Satellite internet is simply that, and mobile internet access usually goes by industry terms such as "3G" and "4G". Wireless internet access is a growing new technology and is not available in most areas, but works off the same technology that wireless routers do, and is generally being deployed in areas where other services are unavailable or impractical.
Nbn Network plans tend to suffer from distance limitations, with most users needing to be within a few thousand feet of a central station to get service.Nbn network plans are currently available in limited areas but is quite expensive. Mobile and wireless internet service both suffer from the problems of limited availability due to the short range of the towers and the relative age of the technology.
All that being said, it is only a matter of time before broadband becomes available everywhere, the real choice is which service is ideal for your needs.
